The Countrywoman - one of the four central needlepoint motifs from Talavera - 17th Century Historical European Tapestry Collection.

The design is similar to the robust female figures painted by Pablo Picasso - in Deux Femmes Courant sur la Plage.

Triangulation - so praised in classical masterpieces - may be admired in this composition. The decorative motif - exclusive to Spanish Talaveran ceramics - has a uniqueness that remains unchanged since Renaissance times. It is one of a multitud of themes within a series entitled *The Trades of Talavera*

The historical development of Talavera de la Reina*s world-famous ceramics - dating back to the 15th century - is chronicled in this bold - provincial and traditional design.

The minerals in Talavera Spain - used to paint this tile - were - and are - historically well-known for their unique vivid colors - owed to the soil composition.

The wool fibers for these needlepoint kits were very carefully dyed to matched the original colors. The velveteen or corduroy skirt uses six shades of maize - the shading has two tones of sage green. The forest green vest progresses into a chartreuse then yellow - and is accurate to the original tile colors. The ever so discreet touch of tangerine is used to portray an autumn vegetation - repeated in the ground cover and falling feed.
